See comment on lighting efficiency at EA Credit 1, above.
6. Sustainable performance criteria
No criteria have been identified.
7. Sustainable composition of product
StarSilent panels are made from post-consumer recycled expanded glass granulate. See MR Credits 4.1 and 4.3, above.
8. Material extraction and transportation
StarSilent products are shipped from Europe in containers to ports on the East Coast of North America. They are then transported by truck. Alternative arrangements can be made for large shipments. The light weight of the StarSilent system minimizes energy expended in transport.
9. Manufacturing phase
A small quantity of water is used during panel manufacturing to cool the press. No by-products are produced in the manufacturing process. No toxic or hazardous materials are used or produced. See MSDS.
10. Construction phase
Scrap: In typical installations, less than 5 to 10 percent of StarSilent panels are lost due to cut pieces that are too small to use elsewhere. Unused finish coat materials can be saved for use on other projects. The light weight of StarSilent materials simplifies handling and reduces installation energy use.
11.Facility operations phase
The acoustical properties of StarSilent ceilings improve the acoustic quality of a space. Studies have shown that building occupants are more satisfied and productive in optimal acoustic environments. StarSilent can provide noise reduction coefficients (NRC) up to 0.80 in accordance with ASTM C423 – Sound Absorption and Sound Absorption Coefficients by the Reverberation Room Method.
The StarSilent system is mold resistant.
12. Deconstruction / recycling phase
Panel scraps that are not covered with finish may be acceptable in mixed-glass recycling facilities. Demolition debris may be acceptable as a fill material or roadway base material.
13. Additional information
The StarSilent system is durable and can last the life of a building with minimal maintenance. The surface can be vacuumed with a stiff bristle brush. Small smudges can be removed with a soft pencil eraser. If necessary, the StarSilent finish can be re applied; existing finish coats can be removed by moistening and scraping. A ceiling can also be rejuvenated by applying low-VOC paint that is compatible with the ceiling’s acoustical performance.
14. Certification
The information provided herein concerning the sustainability of StarSilent ceilings is true, correct, and verifiable.
Acoustical Data
The acoustical data represented here is the octave band data from the acoustical test reports. For the complete acoustical tests reports, please contact Pyrok Inc.
Some products have been tested with only duct tape on the edges of the acoustical samples instead of wood or metal frames. There should not be a gap between the test sample and edge frames. It is estimated that that acoustical data obtained in this manner is 10% – 20% higher than if the data were obtained with metal or wood frame negating edge absorption of the test specimen.
Note: When comparing acoustical data of different products it is important to note the mounting of the acoustical specimen as well as how the exposed edges are treated in the laboratory. The data reported here is the most conservative as the edges of the test samples have been sealed with a metal or wooden frame. In this manner there is no edge absorption. Edge absorption artificially inflates a product’s acoustical value in the laboratory and this value is not representative of the field applied material. Some products have been tested with only duct tape on the edges of the acoustical samples instead of wood or metal frames. It is estimated that the acoustical data obtained in this manner is 10% – 20% higher than if the data were obtained with metal or wood frame negating edge absorption of the test specimen.

StarSilent Smooth Acoustic Systems Product Data
1. Description
StarSilent seamless acoustical plaster ceiling is comprised of a sound absorbing board that allows jointless areas of up to 1800 square feet. This board is manufactured with 96% recycled glass. The substrate is then coated with StarSilent smooth acoustic fiber-free plaster, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing and smooth finish.
2. Uses
StarSilent acoustical plaster system can be used as a finish system for walls and ceilings. The material is recommended for interior use only. Typically, StarSilent is specified for office interiors, lobbies, atriums, natatoriums, gymnasiums and other areas requiring acoustical performance without the look of ceiling grids. The finish is available in white or can be painted without the loss of sound absorbing qualities.
3. Applications
StarSilent acoustical systems are to be installed only by approved StarSilent applicators. An approved applicator list is available through Pyrok Inc. or your local representative.
4. Application Procedures Summary
StarSilent boards are to be mechanically fastened to a rigid framing system. The framing system should include 20 gauge 7/8 framing channels on 400mm (15 ¾ inch) centers and must be approved by the applicator prior to installation of the board system. Drywall grid framing can be utilized but contact Pyrok, Inc. for details. StarSilent boards (10mm, 15mm, 25mm thicknesses) are installed in a staggered pattern and are joined together with StarSilent Adhesive. Perimeters of the StarSilent system must not be attached to walls or other surfaces (floating). Light fixtures and other items penetrating the ceiling must be reviewed and approved by the applicator prior to their use and installation in the ceiling. Once the boards are installed, then the StarSilent base coat and finish coat plaster can be installed. Drying times for StarSilent Adhesive, StarSilent Base and StarSilent Finish must be adhered to. The StarSilent Adhesive requires overnight drying and the StarSilent Base requires 36 hours dry time before the StarSilent Finish coat can be applied. Minimum temperatures should be maintained at 50 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
5. Architectural Details
Critical Light – StarSilent acoustical systems offer a superior alternative to standard acoustical ceiling systems. With the look of flat plaster or drywall ceilings, the StarSilent acoustic system is a hidden high performance acoustical product. Daylight at the end of a corridor and windows and artificial light sources adjacent to a wall or ceilings are typical issues that should be discussed in the design stage.
Finish Surface – The StarSilent acoustic system provides a smooth and monolithic finish surface. However, one must be aware that the product is a slow setting plaster material applied by hand. Like all plaster materials, small blemishes and trowel marks may be present due to the nature of the product and its hand application. The aggregate in the product is coarse; therefore edges may have a slightly rougher appearance if examined closely. StarSilent is not a leveling plaster; therefore it will follow the contours of the StarSilent substrate board. If framing systems are not installed level, then the board and plaster will conform to the framing system. A tolerance of 3/32 inches in 4 feet is acceptable.
6. Acoustical Performance
The StarSilent Acoustical System is mounted with an air gap to maximize sound absorbing performance. The gap can be as little as 3/8 inch (where ceiling heights need to be preserved) to 3 5/8 inches for wall assemblies or greater. The acoustical performance is typically an NRC = 0.55 to 0.90. Acoustical tests reports are available upon request.
7. Physical Performance
Pyrok StarSilent is the most durable of all the smooth, seamless acoustical plaster systems. It boasts an average compressive strength of over 200psi (ASTM E 761) which cannot be matched by plaster products using a fiberglass base for sound absorption. This makes StarSilent suitable for contact walls and low ceilings. StarSilent has a light reflectance value greater than 90 when tested to ASTM E 1477.
8. Cleaning & Repair
The StarSilent finish can be cleaned by vacuum brushing. Scratches and dents can be repaired but only by an approved StarSilent installer or Pyrok, Inc.
9. Warranty
Manufacturer shall warrant the material to be supplied, agreeing to repair/replace that which has cracked, flaked, dusted excessively, peeled or fallen from substrate or otherwise deteriorated to a condition where it would not perform effectively as intended for a sound absorbent purpose; due to defective materials and not due to abuse, improper maintenance, unforeseen ambient exposures or other causes beyond anticipated conditions by the manufacturer. The warranty period will be 5 years from date of substantial completion.
StarSilent Superfine Acoustic Systems Product Data
1. Description
StarSilent seamless acoustical plaster ceiling is comprised of a sound absorbing board that allows jointless areas of up to 1800 square feet. This board is manufactured with 96% post consumer recycled glass. The substrate is then coated with StarSilent Superfine acoustic fiber-free plaster, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing and Superfine finish. The plasters are 50% pre consumer recycled marble aggregate.
The Superfine finish is especially recommended when there are high ceiling heights (as full deck scaffolding is not required and the Superfine texture appears smooth) and where critical light may highlight the hand trowelling limitations of the smooth system.
3. Applications
StarSilent acoustical systems are to be installed only by approved StarSilent applicators. An approved applicator list is available through Pyrok Inc. or your local representative.
4. Application Procedures Summary
